Flickering black and white image on DVD

I have a LG 16 x Dual Layer DVDRW drive, I am using Winavi to convert my media files and then using nero to burn them, also I am using Maxell 16x DVD-R's. I've burned 5 movies going through WinAvi and then Nero, now the first movie I made plays perfectly fine on both my computer and my home theatre, the other four movies play fine on the computer, but in my home theatre they start playing black and white with a flickering screen, you can barely see any video but the audio is fine, I'm really starting to get frustrated with this, can anyone help me out ?

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

I was going to ask whether Macrovision protection could be kicking in, as that can fade images in and out and I guess make it flicker. But the 3rd DVD player may have given the answer away..

Are you in the US, and therefore have NTSC TV etc. ? Could the burned videos be in PAL format? Nero will burn anything you give it, so WinAVI might be outputting as PAL, or leaving the source files as they were, which mihgt have been PAL. The first video may just be in NTSC so works fine (I asusme it works on the 3rd DVD player?)

Can you check which video system they are recorded in?

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

I don't know what they were recorded with basically what I'm doing is downloading the movies via torrent clients then using Winavi to convert them to DVD format and then Nero to burn the DVD format.

Is there a way to tell Winavi to convert to NTSC format?

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

Apparantly not. You might need to use some other software. Have you looked at NeroVision Express? That should do it.

Will NeroVision Express take it from Avi to DVD?

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

Here's the better question, if you downloaded an AVI or any movie file for that matter and were going to burn it to DVD what programs would you use and how would you do it?

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

Haven't tried it myself, but yes. You simply select your videos and add them to your project, and then can burn out as a DVD. Obviously if you only have one big AVI file, then you just add that.

You can set menus etc. and then burn to a directory for later burning, or straight to DVD

Trouble is that NeroVision Express is part of the Nero 7 bundle, so you have to upgrade/pay for the whole thing.

There is a nice run-through here, with some mixed response form the comments [Unverified link]

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

personally I don't see the point in moving AVIs onto DVDs. The easiest way is to either play them from a media server or to get a DVD player that will playback DivX AVI files staright from DVD or external HDD. Saves a lot of time converting and burning!

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

LOL, well paying for a program is not something that I would ever do, I'll just go home from work at lunch and finda cracked copy on Torrent Spy. But thanks for that link, I searched through the site a bit and found a way to tell Winavi to convert to NTSC on the DVD outpu so I'm going to give it a shot when I go home at lunch in 19 minutes.

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

Unfortunately my home theatre system doesn't play DivX even though it's brand new I didn't have the money to be the system that played divx, if what I'm goign to try at lunch doesn't work I'll just by an S-Video cable and wire the computer to the home theatre.

re: Flickering black and white image on DVD

Well went home at lunch, went into Winavi and changed the default setting for converting to a DVD from AUTO to NTSC and it worked so I guess the reason why it was working my computer and not the home theatre is because my home theatre can't decode PAL format. So once again thanks for that link it eventually lead me to the answer that I was looking for.
