can''t play DVD''s, I''m a computer dummy!!
Hello, I've got windows xp on my tower it says cd rewritable and DVD rom should I not be able to play DVDs on my computer? When I try it says It can't play them as I may need either an updated driver or my screen resolution may be too high. I've gone to update the driver, and it says I need to inset disc which I do not have, then if I go to windows updates it says I'm on automatic updates and all my drivers are up to date, went to screen resolution, and that just upset my whole system and everything went huge lol! PLEASE can anyone help this dummy? in easy to understand terms thanks in advance!!

your not the only one out there with this problem. I have just downloaded brand new version of windows xp and I have the same problem. Yet my son using his laptop with xp has no problem.
I have done all that has been suggested by 'errors' and am now back to dvd decoder is not installed on your computer.
I am almost at the stage of having to go back to the manufacturer as I will have to pay out again to correct this mess.

My solution to this was firstly to download the K-Lite Codec Pack which meant that my Windows Media Player can now play DVDs but since then I've also come accross DVD-Media Player Classic which has all the codecs included and the playback is excellent in quality and it's all free! But the best piece of software Ive come accross has been Nero 7 Ultra Edition which is absolutely brilliant.
To Keith,
Your son probably has the media edition already on his computer, which I didn't have, and I'm guessing that you don't. But if you download my suggestions you wont have to pay out anything!
Good Luck, It's all trial and error, but most solutions are out there and free if you just know where to look!!

I found a way to play my DVD
Firstly I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack and after carefully reading the notes installed what I thought I needed, this enabled my Windows Media Player to now play my DVDs. Also there is free software out there one of the best being DVD-Media Classic, which comes complete with codecs. Nero 7 Ultra Edition is a brilliant piece of software which I have come accross too! Good luck to anyone like me who is new to computers but may not have the latest software of hardware for that matter. It is all possible, and the information is out there, and you can get nearly everything for nothing if you know how, but it has been trial and error for me!
